Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are unique in that, in addition to their surgical training, they receive formal training in the administration of general anesthesia. This training includes extended hospital-based rotations with anesthesiologists during their postgraduate residency training.

As a result, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are highly qualified and experienced in providing IV outpatient anesthesia for office-based procedures when appropriate.

All patients receiving IV anesthesia are fully monitored throughout the procedure and recovery period until discharge. Healthy adults, adolescents, and children are generally candidates for in-office anesthesia. Patients with certain medical conditions or health concerns may not be candidates for this type of anesthesia.

If you are scheduled to receive office anesthesia, please do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours prior to your procedure. You should also avoid chewing gum or eating candy. Please wear comfortable clothing and arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home safely after your procedure.
